Should we pay per mile for road tax?

We ask the people of Cardiff whether road tax reform would work, meaning those who travel more pay more.

00:00It might, if we had to travel backwards and forwards to England all the time,

00:05because that's a fair few miles.

00:07It all depends how much they're going to charge, obviously.

00:10If it's a penny a mile, it's not a problem, is it?

00:13If they're going to charge you £10, £15 a mile,

00:16then that might work out to be a bit of a problem.

00:19Well, if you're working and you need your car, that's not a very good idea.

00:24It should be, well, set up a subscription or something,

00:29a licence subscription, make that work.

00:32They still have to pay whatever the car tax is for it now for the year.

00:36Whereas if they do it per mile, if I've only got a property to see my daughter,

00:39she lives in Maesteg, I live in Cardiff, I can go down and see her.

00:42I mean, if I've got to pay per mile, it doesn't matter.

00:45I'd rather, you know, it depends on big commuters.

00:48Also, your distances, if you're a salesperson going up and down the country,

00:54you're going to need the mileage,

00:56so you don't want to end up spending tonnes and tonnes and tonnes.
