00:00Toxic politics has always been a part of the Malay political landscape, an analyst said,

00:08although methods have evolved with the rise of technology. Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani said,

00:14before the advent of social media, it was common to find Surat Layang or poison pen

00:20letters being circulated, especially during UMNO General Assemblies. He said people now

00:26have easier access to information, and with it, slanderous content, which social media

00:32has amplified. On Wednesday, UMNO Deputy President Muhammad

00:36Hassan lamented the death of mature, polite and thoughtful politics, which he said was

00:42based on the best ideas available across the Malay political landscape. Shahzad Shukri

00:47of International Islamic University Malaysia, however, would not go so far as to say that

00:52mature politics had died, but acknowledged that it has regressed, saying that politics

00:58has simply become a blame game. Meanwhile, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara

01:03said toxic politics began to take root during GE14, with past campaigns relying heavily

01:10on issues surrounding race, royalty and religion. He said GE14 was when rhetoric took over from

01:17policy, adding that while they were devoid of substance, using it endeared politicians

01:23to the people.
