00:00For decades, sea turtles at Pulau Redang in Terengganu faced a bleak future due to poaching and habitat degradation.
00:09But in 1993, hope emerged with the Chagarhutang Turtle Conservation Project.
00:16Increasing numbers of returning turtles to Chagarhutang have been observed, showcasing the success of their conservation efforts.
00:26The project, co-founded by Dr. Chan Eng Heng and Liu Hopchark, has transformed Chagarhutang into a turtle sanctuary since 2005, with the waters here protected since 1994.
00:40The conservation efforts have significantly increased nesting activity, from 200 to 300 nests annually to over 1,000 to 1,500 nests per year.
00:52This success is attributed to Chagarhutang's Turtle Release Program, a collaboration between University of Malaysia Terengganu, NGOs and local stakeholders.
01:03The program goes beyond simply releasing hatchlings. It fosters responsibility and awareness among locals and tourists alike.
01:14Educational day trips to Chagarhutang offer on-site briefings by sea trout scientists, site visits, nest checking and, if you're lucky, nest excavations.
01:25Imagine a clutch of tiny turtle hatchlings brimming with life emerging from the sand and embarking on their journey to the ocean.
01:34Everyone is welcome to be part of the solution towards a healthier planet, one hatchling release at a time.
01:42Remember, your actions, no matter how small, can contribute to the ongoing success story of Chagarhutang Beach and its magnificent inhabitants.
