Hi kids! We learned comparing numbers with the digit comparing method in our last lesson.
00:09
Today, we will learn another method for comparing numbers, place value chart method.
00:17
So let's get started.
00:20
We have two numbers, 456 and 7,890.
00:29
We will learn comparing numbers using the place value chart.
00:35
Here is our place value chart.
00:38
Now, let's put the numbers we have in this place value chart,
00:44
writing each digit under its place in the place value chart.
00:50
Now, in the place value chart, you start at left,
00:55
and look for the first place where the digits are different to compare the numbers.
01:02
If we start at left, there is no digit in 456 at thousands place,
01:11
and there is 7 at thousands place in 7,890.
01:18
So, we have bigger number first in 7,890 if we start comparing digits from left.
01:28
So, this number is bigger.
01:33
Let's take another example.
01:36
Here again, we have two numbers.
01:39
Let's compare the numbers here is our place value chart.
01:45
Now, let's put the numbers we have in the place value chart,
01:51
writing each digit under its place in the place value chart.
01:56
We get it like this.
02:00
Now, in the place value chart, you start at left,
02:04
and look for the first place where the digits are different to compare the numbers.
02:11
If we start at left, there are 6 and 1 at hundreds place in both the numbers.
02:19
6 is bigger than 1.
02:22
So, 678,900 is bigger than 100,000.
02:30
Now, let's take another example.
02:34
Here again, we have two numbers.
02:38
Let's compare the numbers.
02:41
First of all, write the numbers in the place value chart
02:45
by writing each digit under its place in place value chart.
02:51
Now, in the place value chart, we start at left,
02:55
and look for the first place where the digits are different to compare the numbers.
03:02
If we start at left, we have different digits in numbers at 100,000s place.
03:10
There are 4 and 6 at 100,000s place.
03:15
6 is bigger than 4.
03:18
So, the number which is having 6 is bigger number.
03:24
Now, let's take another example.
03:28
Here, we have not 2 but 5 numbers,
03:32
and we have to arrange these numbers in decreasing order.
03:36
That is from biggest to smallest.
03:40
Now, let's see how we compare the numbers using the place value chart.
03:46
Here is our place value chart.
03:49
First of all, write all the numbers in the place value chart.
03:54
Remember to write each digit under its place value.
03:59
Now, in the place value chart, you start at left,
04:04
and look for the first place where the digits are different to compare the numbers.
04:12
If we start at left, we have only one number in which have a digit at millions place.
04:20
So, that number is the biggest number.
04:24
Now, we have only one number in which we have a digit at hundreds place.
04:31
So, it's the second biggest number.
04:35
Now, we have 3 numbers which have their leftmost digits at 10,000s place,
04:43
and the digits are 6, 6, and 8.
04:47
And the number which is having biggest number, that is 8, is the third greatest number.
04:55
Now, we have 2 numbers left.
04:59
Now, in these 2 numbers, again, we have to start at left,
05:04
and look for the place where the digits are different to compare the numbers.
05:11
Both the numbers have same digits at 10,000s place,
05:16
plus digits at thousands place, same digits at hundreds place.
05:23
Digits at tens place are different.
05:27
This number has bigger digit, so this number is fourth bigger number.
05:34
And the only number left is the smallest number.
05:38
So, we have so easily arranged our numbers in decreasing order,
05:45
using the place value chart.
05:48
Now, let's take one more example.
05:53
Again, we have 5 numbers, and we have to arrange them in increasing order,
06:00
that is, from smallest to biggest.
06:04
First of all, write all the numbers in the place value chart.
06:09
Now, we want to arrange the numbers in the increasing order,
06:13
so want the smallest number first.
06:17
In the place value chart, we start at left,
06:20
and look for the first place where the digits are different to compare the numbers.
06:27
And if we start at left, there is only one number which has a digit at millions place,
06:34
so it's the biggest number.
06:36
Mark it 5, means it's the biggest number, and place it in the last.
06:44
Now, there is only one number that has a digit at a hundred thousands place,
06:50
so it's the second biggest number.
06:53
Mark it 4, and place it at the second last position in our increasing order list.
07:00
Now, we have two numbers that have their leftmost digits at ten thousands place,
07:06
and they are 8 and 7, where 8 is bigger than 7.
07:13
So, the number which is having 8 is the third biggest number.
07:19
Mark it number 3, and this number will be at number 2.
07:25
Now, only one number is left, which is smallest number.
07:30
Mark it 1, so we have ordered our numbers.
07:35
We have numbered our numbers from 1 to 5, which are smallest to biggest.
07:42
So, kids, we have learned ordering and comparing our numbers using the place value chart.
07:49
So, kids, now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
07:54
Bye-bye!
