Hello kids and welcome to the Place Value House. Today we are talking about 1s and 10s.
00:09
I have here a place value house that has spots for 1s, 10s and 100s. We will only be talking
00:15
about the 1s and 10s today. Here we have the 10s and 1s places. There
00:21
are rules in this house that have to be followed and one of the rules is that you can only
00:26
have one digit in each room. A digit is any number from 0 to 9. Let me
00:33
show you what I mean. Here is the number 2 and this is one digit
00:39
because there is just one number. Let's look at another number.
00:45
This is the number 20. Can you tell me if this number has more than one digit?
00:52
Yes, the number 20 has two digits because the 2 is a digit and the 0 is a digit.
00:59
Uh oh, we cannot put both numbers in the 1s room. We have to split them into each place.
01:06
This is still the number 20. We just have the 2 in the 10s place and the 0 in the 1s
01:11
place. Now that we have that rule out of the way,
01:14
let's look at some place value blocks. Here is a 1s block. This 1s block is worth
01:20
1 and is represented by the number 1. What if I add more 1s blocks to the 1s place?
01:30
How many 1s blocks do I have now? I have 5 1s blocks! Great job! We can see
01:38
the number 5 above the room and we are not breaking the house rules because we still
01:42
have just one digit in the room. Now let's add 4 more 1s blocks.
01:50
How many blocks do we have now? Can you count them for me?
01:56
We have 9 of the 1s blocks! Great job again! But wait a minute, another block just moved
02:02
into the 1s place, but something is wrong. I think I know what it is. We have reached
02:09
the number 10. Because we have reached the number 10, we have more than one digit and
02:14
we are breaking the rule of one digit per room.
02:17
Now here is the really cool part that I learned the other day. Watch what happens to the blocks
02:22
when there are 10 of them in the 1s place. All of the 10 1s blocks stuck together to
02:30
form what we call a 10s block. This is a group of 10 1s called a 10. Why do you think we
02:37
call this a 10? We call it a 10 because this 10s block is
02:42
made up of 10 1s blocks. You guys are awesome! When we had 9 of the 1s blocks in the room
02:49
we had no problems but once we reached 10 we had to form a 10s block. The 10s block
02:56
is now in the 10s place and not the 1s place. In the 10s place we are only allowed to have
03:01
groups of 10. That means we cannot have any 1s blocks in this room. If we look at the
03:09
number above we see a number 1 in the 10s place and the number 0 in the 1s place. We
03:16
have to remember that the 10 in the 10s place is really 10 1s blocks that have grouped themselves
03:20
together to form a 10. This is some amazing stuff to learn. Let's
03:26
look at another one. Here we have 4 1s blocks and they go in the 1s place. Now count with
03:34
me as we add more 1s blocks to the room. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and here comes one more. Once
03:47
we have 10 of the 1s blocks we have to group them into what? We group them into a 10. Great
03:55
job! This is a 10s block. Can you tell me which
04:00
room a 10s block belongs in? It belongs in the 10s room. You guys are amazing at this.
04:09
We now know that when we have 10 1s blocks it is grouped into a 10. The number 10 means
04:14
1 10 and 0 1s because there is nothing in the 1s room. Wow, this has been amazing. Thank
04:21
you so much for helping me. Come visit me again real soon. Goodbye!
