Today, we're going to go over how to identify a number using place value blocks, then you'll

have a chance to practice on your own.

Let's say you're given these place value blocks and asked to identify the number.

Well, you could start by counting up these small blocks on the right.

We call these 1s, and can count that there's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7 1s, or a total of 7

blocks.

Next, we can look at these tall rods.

Well, if you look at just a single rod, you can see that it's made up of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,

6, 7, 8, 9, 10 blocks.

For that reason, we call these rods 10s, and we can count that we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 of

them, or a total of 50 blocks.

Next, we can move to these flat squares.

Well, if you look at just one square, you can see it's made up of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

What is 10 10s equal to?

Well, 10 10s, or 10 times 10, is 100.

There are 100 blocks in each of these squares, so we call them hundreds.

We can count that we have 100, 200, 300, 400, or a total of 400 blocks.

Finally, you can look to these big cubes.

Well, if you look at one cube, it's made up of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 hundreds.

What is 10 hundreds equal to?

Well, 10 hundreds, or 10 times 100, is 1,000.

Each of these large cubes is made of 1,000 blocks, so we call them thousands.

We can count that we have 1,000, 2,000, or a total of 2,000 blocks.

So to identify what number all of these represent, we just add up the pieces, 2,000, plus 400,
