The U.K.'s new prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has promised to bring change, but what does
00:06
this mean for the future of Britain?
00:10
Hungary's Viktor Orban was in Moscow for talks with Putin in a rare visit to Russia by European
00:15
leader since it invaded Ukraine more than two years ago.
00:21
Days after assuming the European Council presidency, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban sparks
00:26
anger in Brussels for a surprise trip to Moscow.
00:31
Russia has been hit by an overnight Ukrainian drone strike in the southern region of Krasnodar.
00:45
On the morning of the Labor Party's landslide U.K. general election win, party leader and
00:51
new prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said, change begins now.
00:57
But what does this mean?
00:59
And what is the expected timeline for a government that's waited 14 years to set the political
01:05
agenda?
01:07
After the 61-year-old former barrister and director of public prosecutions was formally
01:13
appointed prime minister by King Charles III, Starmer said, my government will serve you.
01:21
He told reporters outside 10 Downing Street his ambitions for the next five years would
01:26
focus on putting the country first, party second.
01:32
Changing a country is not like flicking a switch.
01:35
The world is now a more volatile place.
01:38
This will take a while.
01:41
But have no doubt that the work of change begins immediately.
01:47
The Labor Manifesto, a document outlining the party's political priorities, lists five
01:53
goals for the next half decade.
01:57
It includes kick-starting economic growth, reducing violent crime, and improving and
02:02
investing in the ailing national health service.
02:07
Despite the optimism, Starmer and his party face an uphill battle, both at home and abroad,
02:14
and will need to mitigate a cost-of-living crisis, global conflicts, and climate change.
02:23
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was in Moscow for talks with Russian President
02:28
Vladimir Putin in a rare visit to Russia by a European leader since it invaded Ukraine
02:34
more than two years ago.
02:36
Orban's visit comes only days after a similar unannounced visit to Ukraine, where he met
02:42
with Ukrainian President Zelensky and proposed that Kyiv consider an immediate ceasefire
02:47
with Russia.
02:48
His trip to Moscow has drawn criticism from other EU leaders.
02:52
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said unity was the only way
02:56
to peace in Ukraine.
02:58
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk questioned who Orban was serving.
03:12
Orban has routinely blocked, delayed, or watered-down EU efforts to assist Ukraine in peace talks,
03:42
and imposed sanctions on Moscow.
03:47
His visit to Russia comes just days into Hungary's presidency of the Council of the European
03:52
Union, with European Council President Charles Michel saying the rotating presidency had
03:58
no mandate to engage with Russia on behalf of the bloc.
04:06
Make Europe Great Again, borrowing a phrase from Donald Trump, is the slogan of Hungary's
04:10
six-month rotating presidency of the European Council.
04:13
And just days into Hungary's presidency, and Prime Minister Viktor Orban has drawn the
04:17
ire of the EU after reports emerged he's taking an unscheduled visit to Putin in Russia.
04:24
President of the European Council Charles Michel reminded Orban he has no right to represent
04:27
the EU in Moscow, tweeting the EU rotating presidency has no mandate to engage with Russia
04:33
on behalf of the EU.
04:34
No discussions about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine.
04:40
Meanwhile, the government says its priorities for the EU as part of the presidency include
04:44
a strong line of migration, enlargement, and it also has a strong role to play to ensure
04:48
the smooth transition to a new college of commissioners after the European Parliament
04:52
elections.
04:54
It also says defence is a priority, but Hungary is still blocking 6.6 billion euros of military
04:59
support for Ukraine.
05:00
The Hungarian government took the decision that we provide wide-ranging support for Ukraine,
05:07
including humanitarian one, but we do not provide directly or indirectly military support
05:12
to Ukraine.
05:14
The Hungarian government says it promises to be an honest broker and work hard on the
05:18
transition to the new college of commissioners, despite the fact that Viktor Orban, the Prime
05:22
Minister, voted against Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as President of the European
05:26
Commission.
05:27
However, there is concern among some member states that the constant blocking by Hungary
05:31
on issues regarding Ukraine, whether it's military, finance, or the areas of enlargement,
05:36
will still cause consternation.
05:38
Shona Murray, Euronews, Budapest.
05:45
Ukraine has struck the southern Russian region of Krasnodar in an overnight drone attack
05:50
which killed at least one person, according to local authorities.
05:56
More drone strikes in the Republic of Adygea and the central Tambov region are also reported
06:01
to have set several oil depots on fire.
06:06
While Kyiv has not yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, Ukraine has previously struck
06:11
Russian energy sites and targeted its infrastructure.
06:15
It follows footage released by the Russian Ministry of Defence of what it says shows
06:20
units using land drones and tanks to attack Ukrainian positions near Donetsk.
06:28
The statement also said operators of FPV drones have been continually surveying the position
06:37
of the armed forces of Ukraine on the right bank of the Dnieper River.
06:44
It comes as Ukraine's army has been forced to retreat from a neighbourhood in the outskirts
06:49
of Chazev Yar, a strategically important city in the eastern Donetsk region.
06:58
Iranians are voting today in a run-off election to replace the late President Ebrahim Raisi
07:03
killed in a helicopter crash last month.
07:05
After years of economic struggle, mass protests and tensions, public apathy has become pervasive
07:11
in the Islamic Republic.
07:12
Voters face a choice between the hardline former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and
07:17
Mesut Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon and long-time parliament member who has allied himself with
07:22
moderates and reformists within Iran's Shiite theocracy.
07:27
The initial round of voting on June 28 saw no candidate get over 50% of the vote, forcing
07:33
the run-off.
07:34
This was also the lowest turnout ever for an Iranian election.
07:38
There have been calls for a boycott, including from imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate
07:42
Narji Mohammadi.
07:44
Iran's 85-year-old Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has the final say on all matters of state.
07:50
This can bend the country's policies toward confrontation or negotiation with the West.
07:59
Labour unions have staged a protest in Athens against new six-day workweek legislation.
08:06
The new law applies to the public sector, public utilities, banks and some private businesses
08:11
that operate 24 hours a day.
08:15
The government says the initiative will boost productivity and address problems of unpaid
08:19
overtime and undeclared work.
08:22
But unions argue that it ends the traditional five-day working week and rolls back on hard-won
08:28
rights.
08:49
We
09:08
manage everything ourselves, so we do the client schedules, we decide how much time
09:14
we spend with the client, and it's not only the caring part, but also a little bit of
09:20
talking.
09:22
And we have the time to do that, because there's no overhead and that saves a lot of money.
10:14
As France heads to the polls this Sunday in a tense final round of legislative elections,
10:38
the political debate has been marked by the resurgence of anti-Semitism.
10:42
The French Jewish community is sceptical about the new far-right, according to this prospective
10:48
Jewish law-maker.
10:49
Last week, Shannon Serban's heated exchange with a woman in Paris before Sunday's first
11:14
round of voting saw her accused of many things, including being a Zionist.
11:19
If the Jewish community's fears pertained only about the far-right, they are now concerned
11:24
by the anti-Israel slogans of the left.
11:47
Some of the aggression against Jews in Europe have been happening from the start of the
11:51
Gaza conflict, taking advantage of critics against Israeli government policies in Gaza.
11:57
But there is a growing pro-Israeli narrative from some parties.
12:00
In Italy, Giorgia Meloni's ruling far-right has adopted a pro-Israeli narrative too.
12:30
Analysts say the structural difference between the Italian and the French far-right is that
12:58
has been ruling the country for two years and had to deal with world politics and not
13:03
just the moods of the domestic electorate.
