In narrow ruling, US Supreme Court allows emergency abortions in Idaho

00:00It's a procedural order that has left more questions than answers.

00:04The Supreme Court's overturning of the abortion ban in Idaho will allow hospitals to perform

00:09emergency abortions on pregnant women whose lives are at risk.

00:14The 6-3 ruling means Idaho's abortion ban must cede to a federal law known as the Emergency

00:19Medical Treatment and Labor Act, or EMTALA, which requires hospitals to stabilize patients

00:25needing emergency medical care.

00:28The temporary ruling doesn't answer key questions like can doctors provide emergency abortions

00:33elsewhere as most Republican-controlled states have restricted the procedure.

00:38Today's ruling simply delays a final ruling and allows the fight to continue at a lower

00:44court.

00:45Whereas the Supreme Court had the opportunity to definitively say that everyone deserves

00:51access to emergency care, they passed on that opportunity and that should be a warning sign

00:56to everyone.

00:57This comes two years after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a historic

01:03change which no longer guaranteed abortion in America.

01:06Since then, 14 states have banned or severely restricted the procedure.

01:11Every year, around 50,000 women in the US develop life-threatening complications during

01:16pregnancy including sepsis or the loss of reproductive organs.

01:21Abortion has been at the heart of Joe Biden's 2024 presidential campaign as he seeks re-election

01:28and has been focusing on this issue to gain political advantage against the Republicans

01:32in the presidential race.
