Hello and happy Friday, it's Angus here at the Bureau of Meteorology on the 21st of June,
00:05
which is the winter solstice.
00:07
It's the shortest day of the year today in Australia, meaning each day from now until
00:11
summer gets just a little bit more daylight each time.
00:14
But we're not really here to talk about that, we are looking at the weekend weather and
00:18
it's going to be another cool and frosty weekend for many areas, a little bit of rainfall but
00:23
not a lot across the country, tending to hug either coastline.
00:26
Let's get into the national map and see what the major players are in terms of the weather
00:30
features for the weekend.
00:32
We've got low pressure areas over the Tasman, they've been there all week and continuing
00:36
to bring cool southerly winds up from the bottom of the map towards eastern Australia.
00:41
And on Saturday those winds will be carrying a few showers for eastern Victoria and the
00:45
New South Wales coast, so potentially another wet start to your weekend for Sydney, Newcastle,
00:50
Wollongong and those other spots along the coastline.
00:53
At the other side of the country we've got a cold front arriving in Perth early on Saturday
00:57
morning, not a particularly powerful front but it will be bringing the usual array of
01:01
weather so that's a spell of showers with a possible thunderstorm, maybe a little bit
01:05
of hail and some cool gusty winds pushing through in the morning but clearing through
01:09
the second half of the day.
01:11
Elsewhere on Saturday a few showers possible along the Queensland coast all the way from
01:14
Brisbane up to somewhere around that North Tropical Coast area, no significant rain expected
01:19
there, probably single digits in most places if anything at all but if you do see a bit
01:23
of rain, the first in quite some time after several dry weeks.
01:28
Here's the rainfall map for Saturday, just highlighting how many places are expecting
01:31
dry weather tomorrow, pretty much everywhere through the centre and the north of the country.
01:36
The only areas which might see somewhat significant rain are really where we're getting into the
01:39
yellow colouring on the shading here, so southwestern WA maybe 10 to 25mm in a few areas there and
01:46
a thin area of the east coast, so the NSW coastline, potentially some of those eastern
01:50
suburbs of Sydney as well as Gippsland and eastern Victoria and one or two spots along
01:55
the Queensland coast too.
01:57
No surprises that it will be another chilly start to Saturday, morning frosty temperatures
02:01
expected across the east coast, low single digits and in some cases sub zero temperatures
02:06
as you start your weekend, not quite as cool elsewhere but generally a pretty chilly start
02:11
no matter where you live and then temperatures for the afternoon on Saturday looking fairly
02:15
mild across northern Australia, still some 30 degree spots at this time of year through
02:20
the dry season up north but don't expect to get higher than about 16 or 17 degrees if
02:24
you live in Tasmania, Victoria, NSW, ACT, even South Australia, certainly stuck in the
02:30
teens throughout those states.
02:32
Now we'll look at Sunday, high pressure being the dominant feature across the southeast,
02:36
that's giving us clear skies, settled weather but more chilly conditions first thing in
02:40
the morning.
02:41
That high will gradually drift eastwards and help to knock those showers away from the
02:45
coastline, so drying conditions for coastal NSW and Queensland through the day on Sunday.
02:51
Also note this kind of major look in weather system down to the south at the bottom of
02:54
the map, a low with a bunch of fronts wrapping around it, that will be bringing some rain
02:58
across open waters but for the country, just a few showers around the south coast of WA
03:04
and South Australia.
03:05
Another very frosty morning on Sunday, very very chilly for some of these places, every
03:10
state and territory likely to see areas of frost on Sunday but it will be widespread
03:14
through Tasmania, Victoria, southern NSW, southern Queensland and even parts of the
03:19
Northern Territory with just a smattering here and there elsewhere and we're seeing
03:22
that again because it's a clear night and those temperatures are falling, again low
03:26
single digits, zero degrees, sub zero temperatures through a broad part of the country, not quite
03:31
as cool in the west and of course warmer in the north.
03:34
And a nice looking day on Sunday for many but it will be a chilly one so take the jacket
03:37
if you're heading outdoors, temperatures stuck below 15 degrees for many areas in the southeast,
03:43
heading up towards about 20 through central areas and high 20s a little further north.
03:48
That is all from me for now, you can always get weather updates throughout the weekend
03:51
at the Bureau website and app, thank you very much for checking in.
