00:00With an oath and the signing of his name, Cyril Ramaphosa was sworn in for his second
00:08five-year term as South Africa's president.
00:11The 71-year-old now leads what he calls the Government of National Unity, a coalition
00:16that was formed after the May 29th general elections.
00:19Its results were a blow to Ramaphosa's party, the ANC.
00:23Faced with voter disgruntlement over poverty, crime, power cuts and corruption, the ANC
00:28did not, for the first time, win an outright majority.
00:32So it joined forces with four other parties.
00:34For the president, such power-sharing is a milestone for South Africa's young democracy.
00:39As we enter another era in the life of our nation, the resilience of our democracy has
00:48once more been tested and the people have spoken loudly.
00:55With the skyline of Pretoria as his backdrop and joined by over 18 heads of state, Ramaphosa
01:01vowed that there would be cooperation within his coalition.
01:04But critics say long-standing divisions between them could make the new government unstable.
01:10For the coalition includes the ANC's largest rival and historic critic, the Democratic
01:14Alliance.
01:15With pro-business stances, the centre-right party disagrees on spending, namely over South
01:20Africa's health care system and the ANC's Black Economic Empowerment Programme.
01:25With negotiations still underway between the parties, Ramaphosa is expected to name a cabinet
01:30in the coming days.
