'We need hope' says German chancellor at EU election campaign kick-off

On Saturday, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) launched its European election campaign in Hamburg, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and lead candidate for the European elections Katarina Barley both in attendance.

00:00As EU election campaigns kick off in Germany, the war in Ukraine is a dominant topic.

00:06German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made efforts to alleviate public concern that Germany would be further drawn in to the conflict.

00:15Europe also for our economic future.

00:18And that's why we have to do something about the economic changes that lie ahead.

00:25Scholz said Germany would continue to stand by Ukraine's side under his leadership,

00:30with it being the second largest arms supplier to the country after the USA.

00:35However, he also said a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia should be avoided.
