Welcome to MojoPlays! Today, we’re looking at 10 “Fallout” vaults with the creepiest backstories; it would be better to brave the Wasteland than stay in these shelters. For this list, we’re only looking at vaults that appear physically in-game and can be explored by the player.

00:00 It's so good to see you, but what are you doing here?
00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo. Today, we're looking at 10 Fallout Vaults with the creepiest backstories.
00:10 For this list, we're only looking at vaults that appear physically in-game
00:14 and can be explored by the player. Vault 34, Fallout New Vegas.
00:20 Greetings. Pardon my enthusiasm. I'm not accustomed to meeting so many new people,
00:26 but I find you fascinating.
00:27 Though its backstory may seem a little less twisted than some others,
00:31 Vault 34 is hands-down one of the creepiest vaults in the Mojave Wasteland.
00:37 Designed to house an elaborate armory, eventually, the dwellers rebelled against the Overseer,
00:43 seized the weapons, and fled, finding Nellis and becoming the heavily armored Boomers.
00:49 Those left behind were subjugated once more until a second rebellion happened,
00:54 this one resulting in severe damage to the nuclear reactor.
00:58 All the dwellers still inside became dangerous, feral ghouls.
01:02 As well as housing some unique weapons, Vault 34 is also home to one of the franchise's
01:08 hardest moral choices. Do you save a family trapped in the vault,
01:13 but doom the farms above, or save the farms and let the family die?
01:23 Vault 12, Fallout
01:25 Why send a ghoul for a child's work? Leave me.
01:30 The vaults encountered in the first two games weren't all that sinister,
01:35 especially not by the standards of later entries in the franchise.
01:38 But Vault 12 was certainly unpleasant when you dug into its past.
01:43 You initially travel to Vault 12 to find a working water chip to replace Vault 13's,
01:48 and find a huge city of ghouls built within it,
01:52 now known as Necropolis and occupied by the Master's super mutant army.
01:57 Vault 12 and Necropolis are underneath the ruins of Bakersfield, and were, of course,
02:02 part of an elaborate experiment on the part of Vault-Tec.
02:06 It seems that this time, they wanted to see what would happen
02:09 if they built a vault with a faulty door that would never quite close.
02:14 The vault was filled with radiation, and only seven years after the war,
02:19 most of the population had become ghouls.
02:22 Is your head empty?
02:24 Vault 19, Fallout New Vegas
02:27 Cook left the vault. Good thing, too. He was gonna get us all killed.
02:31 Why are you even talking to me?
02:34 The Powder Gangers are the first villainous faction encountered in New Vegas,
02:39 but they're not all that intimidating.
02:41 While most of them are still holed up in the NCR Correctional Facility,
02:45 some others have set up camp in Vault 19,
02:48 a vault designed to study the effects of arbitrary segregation.
02:52 Dwellers were randomly assigned a color, red or blue,
02:55 and sent to live in either the red sector or blue sector.
02:59 The two overseers were in on the scheme,
03:01 and working for Vault-Tec, they encouraged the dwellers to distrust their neighbors.
03:05 The people became sickeningly paranoid and didn't trust anybody around them.
03:10 They could hardly even trust themselves.
03:12 It's not clear how many of them made it out,
03:15 but hopefully, some did escape and find some peace.
03:19 Well, now. The Armory could always use more firepower.
03:23 Very well. Tell the Powder Gangers we accept their offer.
03:26 Vault 75, Fallout 4
03:29 We already saw one settlement inhabited by children in the series,
03:36 but unlike Vault 75, Little Lamplight was born by total accident
03:41 when a school field trip was trapped in the Lamplight Caves as the Great War began.
03:46 Vault 75, on the other hand, was designed to indoctrinate children into becoming soldiers.
03:52 Built underneath Maiden Middle School in Boston,
03:54 the children's parents were executed as the war began.
03:58 The children were never meant to make it out either,
04:01 not unless they were talented enough to join the military behind the scenes.
04:05 They were almost all periodically executed upon becoming adults.
04:09 It's not clear how long this horror continued until the inhabitants finally escaped,
04:14 but it was certainly longer than anyone would have liked.
04:17 Vault 22, Fallout New Vegas
04:32 Though lots of Vault-Tec experiments were deeply cruel and sadistic,
04:36 others made complete sense given the Vault's purpose as fallout shelters.
04:40 Vault 22 is one such case, designed to work out how to grow plants in the irradiated wasteland.
04:46 And, in a lot of ways, it was a success. They did grow a whole lot of plants.
04:52 Unfortunately, they also produced deadly fungal spores
04:56 that turned the Vault dwellers into bright green spore carriers.
05:00 You need to navigate the maze-like halls and decide what's best for the wasteland.
05:04 Destroy the Vault and everything contained within,
05:07 or take the science in case it's useful for growing crops.
05:10 But, you have to give it to an untrustworthy member of the NCR.
05:15 It's one of New Vegas' most unique locations and best-designed quests.
05:28 Vault 92, Fallout 3
05:30 Perhaps Fallout 3's most underrated Vault,
05:43 Vault 92 was built to house the US's best and brightest musicians.
05:47 The Lone Wanderer is sent there by Agatha,
05:50 an elderly violinist who wants them to retrieve a pristine, soul Stradivarius from inside.
05:56 Once there, you'll be mostly contending with Mirelurks and trying to unravel the mystery of the Vault.
06:02 It turns out that Vault-Tec didn't care all that much about music,
06:05 because the Vault's experiment was to brainwash the inhabitants using subliminal,
06:10 white noise so that they could become obedient and effective super-soldiers.
06:14 It worked a little too well though,
06:16 driving the dwellers to madness and causing them to kill each other.
06:21 "Honest, I'm incoming!"
06:23 Vault 95, Fallout 4
06:31 While many of the Vaults seemed to house only those rich enough to pay for a spot within,
06:41 Vault 95 had a different audience in mind - recovering and former drug addicts.
06:47 For five years, the residents were treated for addiction and supported,
06:51 until the Vault's experiment kicked in and a secret chem supply was released to the inhabitants.
06:56 With the stress of a nuclear war on top, the dwellers couldn't cope and started to use chems again.
07:02 The Vault descended into chaos and very few made it out.
07:06 It's a truly evil twist of fate to spend five years helping people recover from an illness like addiction,
07:12 only to throw that all away and encourage them to use again,
07:16 which is what makes Vault 95 so sinister.
07:19 Vault 87, Fallout 3
07:26 When Fallout 3 moved the franchise to the East Coast,
07:35 Todd Howard needed to come up with a reason for there to be super mutants miles away from the Master.
07:40 That reason was Vault 87,
07:43 a Vault used to infect people with the Forced Evolutionary Virus, or FEV.
07:48 Vault 87 was also hit head-on by a nuke,
07:52 rendering the main entrance the most irradiated spot in the Capital Wasteland.
07:56 In fact, it's almost impossible to reach the main entrance without using cheats,
08:02 and the door is inaccessible to boot, so you've got to go the back way.
08:07 These creepy caves, called Murder Pass, are also swarming with super mutants.
08:13 The whole ordeal will take a lot of ammo and patience,
08:16 and it's difficult not to pity the super mutants when you find out
08:20 how horrible the story of their creation is.
08:22 Vault 11, Fallout New Vegas
08:42 Maybe there's such a thing as too much democracy?
08:45 In Vault 11, the residents were tasked with regularly electing a new overseer,
08:50 with one catch.
08:51 Whoever was chosen would be sentenced to death and executed.
08:55 By the time the courier reaches the Vault, it's empty,
08:59 save for many sinister posters asking people to elect their least favorite candidate for execution.
09:04 If the dwellers clubbed together and refused to participate in the farcical elections,
09:09 they would all be killed by the Vault's security systems.
09:12 Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.
09:16 However, the story doesn't end there.
09:19 It turns out that this was all a lie.
09:21 Vault-Tec wanted them to refuse a sacrifice,
09:24 and in doing so would congratulate them and end the experiment.
09:28 Only a handful were still alive when this was discovered.
09:31 We should not have had to rely on your help in this crisis.
09:34 I believed my actions were guided by caution and prudence, but I now see the truth.

09:54 Vault 112, Fallout 3
09:59 Hey there, Sport. Beautiful day, isn't it?
10:02 Say, you should go talk to Betty. She's waiting for you over on the playground.
10:07 Have fun, Sport.
10:08 In one of Fallout 3's most memorable quests, the Lone Wanderer reaches Vault 112
10:14 and finally reunites with their father, Liam Neeson.
10:17 Liam Neeson is trapped in the Vault's Tranquility Lane simulation, just like everybody else.
10:23 Forced to occupy a 1950s cul-de-sac,
10:26 living and dying according to the whims of the Vault's insane overseer, Dr. Braun.
10:31 The Vault has a good karma and bad karma way out.
10:35 In the former, you'll need to sneak into a spooky, abandoned house
10:38 and activate the simulation's failsafe, putting all the residents out of their misery.
10:43 In the latter, you terrorize the neighborhood,
10:46 becoming the pint-sized slasher and murder the dwellers one by one.
10:51 Having your life ended over and over again by some maniac is definitely an awful way to spend 200 years.
11:00 You've saved me. I was afraid I'd be trapped in there forever.
