Sugar’s Hidden Dangers

The World Health Organization recommends eating a maximum of 25 grams of sugar a day—the same as eight sugar cubes. That’s not so much when you consider how much sugar is concealed in processed foods. So what should you watch out for?

That might sound good, but actually it's bad.

Sugar is unhealthy. It provides pure energy without vitamins or nutrients.

And that can make you ill.

When sugar enters the body, insulin is released

and we consume energy in the form of calories.

And both together, a lot of insulin and a lot of calories,

are at the root of all diseases of civilization.

Among them, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,

lipid metabolism disorder, cardiovascular diseases,

obesity, diabetes and cancer.

That's 25 grams.

But most of us eat 2 to 3 times this amount.

It looks very straightforward. Very little versus a lot.

But none of us eat sugar cubes.

We have this discrepancy because this here is hidden in so many foods.

For example, in fruit yogurts, ready-to-eat meals and snacks.

We find sugar everywhere in the list of ingredients,

often listed as glucose, dextrose, invert sugar syrup or fructose.

Hold on, fructose?

Fructose sounds very healthy,

better than industrially produced conventional sugar at least.

But the problem is, is that fructose is particularly toxic for the liver.

Incidentally, this also applies to natural and supposedly healthier sweetener alternatives,

including agave syrup, maple syrup or honey.

In honey there are traces of other substances, vitamins, minerals,

but in very small amounts.

You can't eat enough kilos of honey to have any relevant vitamin intake.

That's just marketing and nonsense ultimately.

Fruit contains many vitamins as well.

So despite the fructose, you can eat up to two portions a day.

And if you exercise a lot, you can also consume a little more sugar.

Half an hour's jogging earns you a chocolate bar, at least a small one.
