At an event on Thursday, President Biden spoke about the special counsel investigation into him.
Transcript
00:00 First, the special counsel released their findings today
00:04 about their look into my handling of classified documents.
00:07 I was pleased to see they reached the conclusion
00:11 I believed and knew all along they would --
00:13 that there are no charges should be brought in this case.
00:16 (Applause.)
00:19 As many of you know, this was an exhaustive investigation,
00:23 going back literally more than 40 years --
00:27 40 years -- when I became a United States senator
00:30 as a kid.
00:31 (Laughter.)
00:32 I was a kid -- 29 years old.
00:34 Special counsel acknowledged I cooperated completely.
00:38 I did not throw up any roadblocks.
00:40 I sought no delays.
00:42 In fact, I was so determined to give special counsel
00:44 what they needed,
00:45 I went forward with a five-hour in-person interview
00:48 over the two days of October the 9th --
00:51 8th and 9th last year,
00:52 even though Israel had just been attacked by Hamas on the 7th.
00:56 I was in the middle of handling an international crisis,
00:59 but I was especially pleased to see the special counsel
01:02 make clear the stark differences
01:03 between this case and Donald Trump.
01:06 As the special counsel wrote, and I quote,
01:09 "Several material distinctions between Mr. Trump's case
01:13 and Mr. Biden's are clear" --
01:15 and, by the way, this is a Republican counsel --
01:17 "most notably, after given multiple chances" --
01:21 this is a continuation of the quote --
01:23 "he returned classified documents and avoided --
01:26 to avoid -- and avoided prosecution.
01:28 Mr. Trump allegedly did the opposite."
01:30 This is the continuing quote. "According to the indictment,
01:33 he has not only refused to return documents
01:36 for many months, he also obstructed justice
01:39 by enlisting others to destroy evidence
01:41 and then lie about it.
01:43 In contrast, Mr. Biden turned in classified documents
01:47 to the National Archives, the Department of Justice,
01:49 consented to a search of multiple locations,
01:51 including his homes, and sat for a voluntary interview."
01:55 And, in other ways, cooperated with the investigation.
01:58 That's the distinction, among others.
02:02 (Applause.)
02:05 Bottom line is, the special counsel in my case
02:08 decided against moving forward with any charges,
02:11 and this matter is now closed.
02:14 (Applause.)
02:18 I'll continue to do what I've always done --
02:20 stay focused on my job, like you do --
02:22 my job of being President.
02:25 That means going to work with all of you every single day.
