Border Czar Tom Homan held a press gaggle outside the White House on Monday, where he was asked about a report of a Cuban national who died in ICE custody.
Transcript
00:00There are reports of a 75-year-old Cuban national who died in ICE custody.
00:05He had lived in the United States for 60 years.
00:08He was being held in ICE detention in Florida.
00:10Is there anything you can tell us about that?
00:12There's still not a lot of information how he died.
00:15I'm unaware of that.
00:16I'm not aware of that.
00:18I mean, people die in ICE custody.
00:19People die in county jails.
00:21People die in state prisons.
00:22I mean, if you look at, you know, when I was ICE director and we drilled down that,
00:26the question should be how many lives does ICE save?
00:29Because when they go in detention, we find many with diseases and stuff that we deal with right away to prevent death.
00:35So I'm not aware of that specific case, but I'll say this.
00:38People can argue with me all they want, but the facts are the facts.
00:40I think the politicians in New Jersey found this out, that we have the highest detention standards in the industry.
00:47I'll compare an ICE detention facility against any state prison, against any federal facility.
00:52I'll go head-to-head with any of them.
00:54You go to ICE.gov and look at our detention standards.
00:57It's the highest detention standards in the industry at a very expensive cost to the taxpayers.
01:02So, you know, people say, oh, the detention standards are horrendous.
01:05Go look for yourself, then come back and talk to me.
01:08I mean, when we talked about the facility that the congressman tried to get into up in New Jersey, Delaney Hall,
01:13once they got in there, what did they find out?
01:15Detentment standards are outstanding.
01:17Probably the cleanest facility in that entire state.
01:19Again, I'll put already detention standards up to anybody.
