Border Czar Tom Homan speaks to reporters outside the White House.
Transcript
00:00Do you have a quick 30 seconds, Mr. Roman?
00:07There's a couple of questions.
00:08There's never been 30 seconds.
00:10There's never been 30 seconds.
00:13Thank you, sir.
00:15One of the big national stories is the flash flooding conditions in Texas.
00:19I know your focus is on border security, but can you just walk us through sort of the federal response and sort of look at my head with that?
00:25Look, I think Secretary Noem and President Trump responded quickly.
00:28I know even the Border Patrol four-star unit was deployed, and they're helping to recover after.
00:35I know Border Patrol air assets are allowed.
00:38I think Secretary Noem reacted quickly.
00:40I mean, thank God President Biden is not president.
00:42We'd still be waiting for this month.
00:45Tom, can you talk about the big, beautiful bill and what sort of money you're going to see for the border, when, what you think you could use it for?
00:53Well, it's going to reduce a lot of things.
00:54As far as the border, it's going to continue the border barrier, border walls.
00:57Border walls work.
00:59Every place to build a wall, able to immigration decrease, able to drug flows decrease.
01:03Not just border wall.
01:04It's going to buy more river buoys.
01:06River buoys are very effective.
01:08And it's also going to give the technology we need on the southern border.
01:12And the existing wall and the new wall.
01:14When President Biden came into office, not only did he stop building a wall.
01:18He stopped putting the technology in the existing wall that does a lot of good things.
01:25It gave a border agency the ability to talk to one another because a lot of dead tones on the border, that doesn't alter your safety issue.
01:32I don't want to get specific.
01:33It's a law enforcement sensitive.
01:34But the technology of that wall helps us to realize when someone's approaching the wall, someone climbs the wall.
01:39So you need that technology there.
01:41It's a border wall system.
01:42So we're going to continue the wall building.
01:45We're going to continue the technology within that wall.
01:48And the technology also for the port of entrance.
01:51You know, we want legal traffic, legal trade to come through the ports as quickly as possible.
01:56But we want, of course, to see as much contraband as we can.
01:59So more technology will make that happen.
02:02As far as ICE, it's a huge plus.
02:0310,000 more officers.
02:04Look, I've been doing this since 1984.
02:07Border patrols have been plussed up many times.
02:09And I appreciate that.
02:10I'm supportive of that.
02:11But when people want to arrest somebody, they go into detention.
02:14Then they go into immigration care.
02:15Then if they get ordered removed, they get removed.
02:17That's all ICE is shot.
02:18So if I border patrols got plussed up over decades, ICE didn't.
02:21So now ICE finally is getting the resources they need.
02:24And, you know, it's going to put more boots on the ground, which we need right now.
02:27I just did an interview.
02:28There's over 600,000 illegal aliens in this nation with criminal histories walking the streets.
02:32We need to find them quickly.
02:33And for those that say 3,000 a day is too much, I want to remind them.
02:37Do the math.
02:38We'd have to arrest 7,000 every single day for the remainder of this administration just to catch it once Biden released the nation.
02:46Right?
02:46We talk about 12 million illegal aliens.
02:48We're going to talk about 12 million for two decades.
02:50We know at least 8 million were released in this country to jail Biden.
02:53So we're well over 20 million.
02:55I'm being conservative.
02:56So more boots on the ground means we arrest more bad people and make this country safe.
02:59Mr. Holman, Zoran Mondani, the likely next mayor of New York City, has promised not to cooperate with you or with ICE or with deportations of any kind.
03:07Do you have a plan?
03:08Is there a plan to work around that?
03:10How are you going to handle it?
03:10I feel like I'm at that we're going to be in New York City, and President Trump said it two weeks ago, we're going to double down and triple down the sanctuary cities.
03:18Why?
03:19Not because of a blue city or a blue state, because we know that's where the problem is.
03:23We know they're releasing public safety threats and national security threats to the streets every day because they don't honor our detainers.
03:29We know that.
03:31We don't have that problem like in Florida, where every sheriff from the state is working with us.
03:35So where we're going to send our assets, we're going to send them where the problem is.
03:38Sanctuary cities.
03:39So I've said it before, we'll flood the zone of sanctuary cities.
03:43If they don't let us arrest a bad guy in the town of jail, they're going to arrest him in the community.
03:48We're going to arrest them at a work center.
03:50So we're going to increase community operation.
03:52We're going to increase work center post-in operation.
03:55We're going to get the bad guys.
03:56So if they don't want to help, get out of the way.
03:57We're coming to do it.
03:58Do you have a priority list?
04:01So what things you'd like to do first, or are you going to do it all at the same time?
04:06Same as day one.
04:07National security threats, public safety threats are always the priority.
04:11But if you're in the country legally, you're not off the table.
04:14I mean, I see people saying we're arresting non-criminalists.
04:17Well, they're in the country legally.
04:18That's our job.
04:19And we totalize agents in the process of going out and looking for the bad guy.
04:22And this is the problem with sanctuary cities.
04:24When we go to the community to go find the criminal, many times they're with others.
04:28Others that may not be a criminal target, but they're in the United States illegally, they're coming too.
04:33We're going to force immigration law.
04:34Unlike the last administration where Secretary Mayorkas instructed us, you can't arrest an illegal alien for simply being here illegally.
04:42They've got to be arrested or being convicted of a serious criminal offense.
04:46He rewrote the law.
04:47That's not what the law says.
04:48We're going to force law.
04:49That's what the people put President Trump in office to do, and that's what we're doing.
04:53Mr. Holman, it's a little out of your area, but Secretary Noem has rejected the idea that staff shortages had anything to do with the problems in Texas and forecasting and getting warnings out.
05:01Are you interested in a serious investigation to find out whether staff shortages had anything to do with it?
05:06You're right.
05:07It's out of my lane.
05:08You know, Secretary Noem, I'm sure he's all over this.
05:11Of course, the first thing the left wants to do is, when there's a tragedy like this, is blame somebody in the Trump administration and the Trump administration.
05:19Bottom line is, I looked at response that occurred.
05:23It's a far better, quicker, appropriate response than you would have seen in there in Biden administration.
05:28These nations reported on concerns of Iranian nationals working with Mexican drug cartels to try and cross the border.
05:41Is that something you're tracking?
05:42How serious of a concern is that?
05:45I can't comment on that.
05:46We're well aware of it, and we're all over it.
05:48Thanks, folks.
05:50Thanks.
