*New* high-speed train from Rome to Pompeii!

We enlisted archaeologist @dariusaryadigs to test out Italy’s new high-speed train from Rome to Pompeii ⤵️

Previously, there were no direct rail routes linking the Eternal City to the popular archaeological site, which was buried in volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago. Travelers needed to first travel from Rome to Naples, then take a notoriously slow ride on an old train from Naples to Pompeii, with stops in several small towns along the way.

Not anymore. The new route doesn’t just get you to Pompeii in less than 2 hours without needing to switch trains—it also takes a historic coastal track that gives you views of the glittering Tyrrhenian Sea before you arrive in the ancient city.

The roundtrip Rome-Pompeii route is currently limited, running just once a month on the third Thursday, but will hopefully expand beginning in 2024.
