Touching moment Doctor Who fan with inoperable brain tumour given his own Dalek
  • 4 months ago
This is the moment a teenager had his dream come true after his town rallied together to raise £5,000 to get him a real Dalek robot from the BBC.

Noah Herniman, 17, made a bucket-list of things he wants to do back in early 2021 when he was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes tumours to grow along the nerves.

In June 2021, Noah and his family, from Chepstow, Wales, received the heartbreaking news that he had developed a type of brain tumour called a glioma that had wrapped itself around his brain stem, making it inoperable.

Family friend, Angela Jones, the family liaison officer at Noah’s old secondary school, wanted to help Noah tick something off his bucket list, and led the charge for raising money on JustGiving to buy Noah a real Doctor Who Dalek.

The Dalek is a real one used by the BBC for Doctor Who programmes.

Angela said: "It was one of the best experiences of my life!

He was so genuinely surprised and delighted and he was actually lost for words.

The timing of the gift was fitting, as it coincided with 'International Dalek Remembrance Day.'

Noah was also treated to a ride around the town in Santa’s Sleigh, courtesy of community group Chepstow Round Table.

Angela said: “Noah’s story is heartbreaking. I got to know him whilst I was his family’s liaison officer at his secondary school and grew a strong bond with him and his family, who are so lovely.

“He is such a funny, quirky boy with a sparky personality who never asks for anything for himself and is constantly doing things to help others in need.

“He is absolutely unstoppable and that is why I want to be able to do this for him. No 17-year-old should be writing a bucket list, but we hope we can reach our target of £4,500 and help someone as deserving as Noah get his dream of owning his own Dalek.”

In May 2023, Noah came up with the idea of fundraising for a holiday home which could be used free of charge for children with cancer and their families.

By July, he had raised £60,000 to buy the holiday home, called ‘Noah’s retreat,’ which is now used by families of children with cancer to create cherished memories.

His full bucket list is:

1. Properly meet David Tennant

2. Own Dalek

3. Learn to drive

4. Be invited to a red-carpet event and get treated like a star for the night

5. Be on TV and have name on the credits of the show
