Roy Gumbs did not get off to a good start as a pro, losing his second, third and fourth bouts. After three quick wins against journeymen, Gumbs was thrown in against unbeaten prospect Tony Sibson and lost on points. Gumbs continued to win and lose an equal number of fights before he went on a run of 18 wins and two draws, with 15 stoppages, in which he won the British and Commonwealth titles, defending the British crown twice and the Commonwealth strap once. His best wins were a pair of knockouts of Ralph Hollet for the Commonwealth title.

Mark Kaylor turned pro in 1980. He won his first 23 bouts, with 20 ending early. He was managed carefully against domestic level boxers, and his biggest win was in May 1983, when he stopped Bobby Watts, who had beaten Marvin Hagler seven years earlier.
