Frank Bruno vs Joe Bugner in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: October 24, 1987

Venue: White Hart Lane, London

Bruno stance: orthodox

Bugner stance: orthodox

After losing his first world title fight by eleventh round stoppage to WBA champion Tim Witherspoon, Frank Bruno took eight months off. He returned with a fifth round stoppage of fading veteran James Tillis. This was followed by a first round blowout of Chuck Gardner and an eighth round knockout of Reggie Gross in Spain. Up next was an eliminator to face undisputed champion Mike Tyson.

After Joe Bugner lost on points to the lightly regarded Steffen Tangstad in 1984, he moved to Australia and was out of the ring for 19 months. He returned to the ring against James Tillis, winning quite comfortably on points. He followed up by beating David Bey on points. Next, he beat former WBA champion Greg Page. These wins put Bugner back in the WBC top ten rankings.
