John H Stracey defended his WBC welterweight title against Hedgemon Lewis

John H Stracey turned pro in 1969 and won the British and European welterweight titles in his first 46 bouts. Stracey then travelled to Mexico City to challenge one of the greatest welterweight champions in boxing history, Jose Napoles. Stracey survived a first round knockdown to stop Napoles in the sixth round and send him into retirement. This win brought Stracey's record to 43-3-1 with 37 KOs.

Hedgemen Lewis turned pro in 1966, and won his first 22 bouts. In his 23rd bout, he was stopped in the ninth round by Ernie Lopez in 1968. Lewis won five bouts before beating Lopez on points in a rematch. He then lost the trilogy bout, stopped in the tenth round. In 1971, Lewis challenged Jose Napoles for his WBC title, losing a close battle on points. Lewis won his next 11 bouts, beating former WBC champion Billy Backus twice. Lewis challenged Napoles again, this time losing in the ninth round. After a couple of close wins against Rafael Rodriguez, Lewis drew with Carlos Palomino and then with Harold Weston.
