Aaron Pryor turned pro in 1976 after a very good amateur career that saw him just miss out of boxing at the Montreal Olympics. His first big win came in his 20th bout when he stopped former WBA light welterweight champion Alonzo Fraser in the fifth round in 1979. Pryor won the WBA light welterweight title in 1980 when he knocked out Antonio Cervantes in the fourth round. He made five defences of his title before facing Arguello, all of them stoppage wins.
Alexis Arguello turned pro in 1968, and despite losing his fourth and fifth bouts, he was able to win 29 of his next 30 bouts, and challenged Ernesto Marcel for the WBA featherweight title in 1974, losing on points. Five fights later, Arguello had another shot at that title, and knocked out Rubén Olivares in the 13th round. After four defences and some non-title bouts, Arguello moved up to super featherweight, winning the WBC title from Alfredo Escalera with a 13th round stoppage. Arguello made eight defences of this title and then beat Jim Watt on points in 1981 to win the WBC lightweight title. He made four defences of this belt before attempting to become the first ever boxer to win world titles at four different weights.
