Nigel Benn defended his WBO world middleweight title against Iran Barkley

Nigel Benn turned pro in 1987 and won his first 22 fights inside the distance. He won the Commonwealth middleweight title in his 17th bout, stopping Abdul Umaru Sanda in the second round. Benn lost his belt in his fourth defence, when he was stopped in the sixth round by Michael Watson. Benn then moved to America, and after three wins against fringe contenders, he challenged Doug DeWitt for the WBO title. Benn was knocked down in the second round, but rallied to stop DeWitt in the eighth round.
Iran Barkley turned pro in 1982, and after a shaky start, he put together a good run of wins that included an eighth round knockout of Wilford Scypion and a split decision verdict over James Kinchen. In 1987, Barkley fought Sumbu Kalambay for the vacant WBA middleweight title, losing on points. After two wins in early 1988, Barkley challenged Thomas Hearns for the WBC title, and stopped him in the third round. Barkley lost his title in his first defence, when Roberto Duran earned a split decision. In his next fight, Barkley challenged Michael Nunn for the IBF title, and lost on a majority decision.
