Gerrie Coetzee turned pro in 1974 and all his fights to date had taken place in his native South Africa. In his 12th bout, Coetzee knocked out former world title challenger Ron Stander. In his 14th fight, he outpointed fellow South African, Kallie Knoetze. They had fought six times as amateurs, winning three bouts each. Coetzee won another five fights, taking his record to 19-0 with 12 KOs.

Randy Stephens also turned pro in 1974. Although his record was only 10-3 with 6 KOs, he had shared the ring with some good opponents. He was knocked out by unbeaten Bernardo Mercado, but in his next bout he stopped Johnny Boudreaux, who was 20-1-1 at the time. Stephens also beat Tom Prater inside the distance in a rematch, and had won three consecutive contests.
