Queensland prepares for Cyclone Jasper to make landfall

Up to 500mm rain expected to fall in some areas over 24 hours, after Tropical Cyclone Jasper hits land in Far North Queensland on December 13, 2023.

00:00 have a warning current for Cape Melville to Cardwell and that extends inland to

00:05 the Atherton Tablelands and Palmerville. So the main impacts very similar to

00:10 yesterday we're not seeing a change in what we can expect in terms of the

00:14 hazards from this system. So the winds as I've said have already begun and will

00:19 continue to worsen and the likely scenario is they'll reach up to 140

00:23 kilometers per hour. So winds of this speed and this category system we can

00:29 see trees starting to fall down including large trees and any unsecured

00:33 items can be moved around as well. In addition to the wind we're also looking

00:38 into the rainfall. So the rainfall isn't just a hazard that can happen with the

00:43 crossing but it can happen days after this cyclone has crossed. So the major

00:48 risk for today is flash flooding. So we do have on our cyclone warning the risk

00:53 of flash flooding within that warning area that may lead to dangerous and

00:58 life-threatening flash flooding and that's from locally intense rainfall. So

01:02 we are likely to see totals in six hours of 250 to 300 millimeters and we could

01:09 see totals in the 24 hour period between 400 and 500 millimeters. There's also a

01:15 risk of riverine flooding as well as storm surge as we see the high tide at

01:20 Cairns at 10 a.m. In terms of riverine flooding we've still got to watch

01:23 current with some warnings likely to be issued later today as we see more

01:28 rainfall throughout the day.
