Today, we are celebrating World Ayurveda Day.
00:04
And not only that, we will know what this is and its connection to yoga.
00:10
And to explain more about this, we will have with us,
00:16
Ms. Joanna Alberto, a Yoga Corporate Wellness Consultant, Yoga Teacher, and Ayurveda Ambassador.
00:22
Good morning, welcome to Rising Shine Philippines, ma'am.
00:24
Good morning. Good morning. Thank you for having me.
00:27
Ms. Joanna, what is Ayurveda and where did it originate?
00:32
So Ayurveda, let's say, Ayur and Veda.
00:36
So Ayur is life and Veda is science or knowledge.
00:40
So Ayurveda, science or knowledge of life.
00:43
So it's an ancient natural system of medicine that came from India.
00:47
It dates back 5,000 years ago.
00:50
So what is popular here, something that is a gift from India to the world is yoga.
00:56
So it's a family-oriented medicine.
00:58
So it's something that is focused on holistic health care, preventive.
01:04
Although it also has alternative medicines that it gives to us.
01:10
But it complements actually modern day medicine.
01:13
It's not what we're removing, the modern day medicine, and then we'll use that.
01:17
It's complementary.
01:19
So this is a lifestyle?
01:21
It's a lifestyle that they promote when it comes to, actually, the most focused is eating.
01:27
The digestive system.
01:29
Filipinos love to eat, right?
01:31
Yes.
01:32
That's why we said that Filipinos should understand Ayurveda.
01:37
Because you know, when it comes to eating, it's not what you eat.
01:40
It's not what we eat.
01:41
It's what you digest when you digest it.
01:45
What you digest and when you digest.
01:48
Yes, when you digest.
01:49
Can you share with us, how does the everyday life, the practice of Ayurveda,
01:58
how does a practitioner do it?
02:01
So it is actually aligned with nature.
02:05
So we believe that there are five elements in your body.
02:09
So fire, air, space, earth, and water.
02:12
What is in the microcosm is in the microcosm.
02:15
So whatever is in the universe, the world, whatever it is, it's the same elements.
02:19
So it should be aligned.
02:21
So when do you eat?
02:22
When you eat, the sun should be high.
02:25
That's fire, right?
02:26
In the afternoon, it should be the heaviest meal.
02:29
So there's no breakfast?
02:30
There's breakfast, but it's light.
02:32
We should rev up our system before we eat a lot.
02:38
Because the fire in our stomach is at its peak when the sun is high.
02:43
So it's easier to digest, right?
02:46
If you want your metabolism to be under, you should eat a lot in the afternoon.
02:50
And when it's night, it should be low.
02:52
When the sun is low.
02:53
When the sun is low, we should eat less.
02:55
So it's really a different kind.
02:58
Because a lot of people say that the heaviest meal should be breakfast, right?
03:01
But it's contrary to that.
03:04
So it's said that during breakfast, eat like a king.
03:07
And when it's night, eat like a beggar.
03:10
Yes, but I read that this is just a marketing strategy from decades ago.
03:19
When people don't need breakfast.
03:22
And what they need is the heavy work.
03:27
For example, construction worker, laborer.
03:29
Those are the people who need breakfast.
03:31
Because they need energy.
03:32
But those who work in the office,
03:34
they say it's better to find doctors who delay breakfast around 10 or 11.
03:41
But in the case of Ayurveda, they do it in the afternoon.
03:45
Because you're connecting with nature.
03:46
But how?
03:47
For example, I just thought of this.
03:49
If there's a storm, like that.
03:50
No sun.
03:51
Is it like that?
03:52
The sun is still up, it's just hidden.
03:54
Oh, so it's just hidden in the sun.
03:56
No, because Ayurveda is actually India, right?
03:59
So we're Asian, right?
04:01
So it's easier for us to practice it because the sun is up.
04:04
Unlike Antarctica, there are days when there's no sun.
04:09
What ma'am is explaining here is that the activity is smooth for the whole day.
04:14
It's connected to nature.
04:17
Aside from eating, are there other practices?
04:19
Oh yeah, there's what we call inner and outer cleansing.
04:23
That's where yoga comes in.
04:25
One practice that's popular there is abhyanga, the oiling.
04:30
We're all fond of massages, right?
04:32
That's what we practice in Ayurveda, the oil massages.
04:36
Then there's another one, tongue cleansing.
04:39
Oh, is that so?
04:40
What's that?
04:41
I don't know.
04:42
After brushing your teeth, right?
04:43
You scrape your tongue.
04:44
They use a metal stick here.
04:47
They do it like that.
04:48
Think about it.
04:49
When you're eating, where does the food go?
04:52
To the mouth, right?
04:54
When you're chewing the food, there are enzymes secreted to help the digestive process.
05:01
Think about it. There are a lot of toxins in the mouth.
05:04
You scrape the tongue so that it's clean before you put in all the nutrients in your body.
05:09
The digestive system doesn't start here.
05:11
Actually, it starts with your eyes, your ears, your nose, when you start smelling the food,
05:16
when you're hearing the food being cooked.
05:18
That's where we're at.
05:20
Everything is really connected.
05:22
So it starts with proper eating, and then how you're going to put the food in your body.
05:31
And next, yoga.
05:34
We've already talked about that.
05:35
And then, here's my question.
05:37
How about medical science?
05:42
The medicine of feelings.
05:44
Is it also included here?
05:45
It's also included.
05:46
India is popular with herbs and spices, right?
05:51
We have a boodle fight.
05:54
You know, the boodle fight where there are a lot of food,
05:59
but here, it's all grilled pork.
06:02
All of it is oily food.
06:05
For them, their boodle is actually all healthy.
06:08
Because what they say in Ayurveda, we have six tastes.
06:12
Different flavors, like sweet, bitter, sour, and sour.
06:16
That's why we sometimes crave for more food.
06:20
It's because the taste is not complete when we eat it.
06:23
For them, it should be complete.
06:24
All of the taste should be in you.
06:27
All of the flavors should be satisfied.
06:30
So that after eating, you don't crave for other things.
06:35
So you should eat food with sweet and sour.
06:38
But just portions.
06:40
See, if you eat Indian food, it's like that.
06:42
But my question is, is this consistent with medical studies?
06:47
Or it's not contradictory?
06:49
No.
06:50
Can you imagine, for example, breathing.
06:55
When you're breathing, in medicine, what are the problems?
06:59
Mental health, right?
07:01
Emotional problems of people.
07:04
So if you're actually practicing Ayurveda,
07:06
inner and outer cleansing, along with yoga.
07:09
Yoga is what they say,
07:11
it's like the exercises that they show on TV.
07:17
But there's more to it.
07:19
For example, the breath work.
07:21
It is very important.
07:23
How do you breathe?
07:24
I'm going to ask you both right now.
07:26
How are you breathing?
07:28
When you put your hand here and you inhale,
07:31
usually our chest is the one that grows, right?
07:34
But it should be the tummy.
07:36
If you're a singer, you know that.
07:38
We forget how to breathe when we grow old.
07:42
When you're stressed, what does your body do first?
07:45
It breathes.
07:47
It's growing without you knowing, right?
07:49
So it's the same thing.
07:51
Ayurveda, all of those sciences,
07:53
it's proven and tested.
07:54
It's not invented by a cosmic thing.
07:58
It's consistent with science.
08:01
What are the benefits if you practice this everything?
08:05
Preventive healthcare.
08:07
It's expensive but it's painful.
08:09
It's true.
08:10
We were talking about it with Batesina,
08:13
with Claksamana, and the Indian Embassy is very supportive.
08:18
They're really pushing Ayurveda for everyone to know.
08:22
When it comes to preventive healthcare,
08:25
we want people to understand that it's cheaper
08:29
to take care of ourselves before it hurts.
08:33
That's what we're trying to prove.
08:36
But my question is, how many years have you been practicing this?
08:39
I went to India in 2016.
08:42
I took up yoga teacher's training.
08:44
They think that yoga is just the asanas,
08:48
they call it the body positions.
08:50
But actually, the foundation is Ayurveda.
08:55
That's where we learned everything about Ayurveda and yoga.
08:59
What has changed in your life?
09:01
I'm just too tired.
09:02
I haven't eaten meat for seven years already.
09:04
Since I went there.
09:06
When I came back here, I can't eat tocino anymore.
09:08
That used to be my favorite.
09:11
So after that, I've been doing a holistic lifestyle.
09:15
Every morning, I do a few stretches, and I rest.
09:18
How about your energy?
09:20
My energy?
09:21
Of course, they say I'm 54 years old,
09:24
but people say that I'm energetic compared to...
09:27
You're just like a very young person.
09:29
You're not that young.
09:31
Let's practice that.
09:33
Let's try that.
09:34
Be healthy.
09:35
Yes.
09:36
And maybe that's the secret to healthy aging.
09:41
Yes.
09:42
That's Ayurveda.
09:43
It's a secret to avoid buffets this Christmas season.
09:46
Yes.
09:47
When we prepare food for the holidays,
09:50
we complete the different tastes so we'll be full right away.
09:53
Well, thank you so much, Ms. Joanna, for sharing this to us.
09:57
We learned a lot.
09:59
We were inspired as well to do that Ayurveda.
10:02
We practice it every day.
10:03
Thank you so much.
10:04
Thank you so much, ma'am.
10:05
Thank you so much for having me.
