00:00 So DRS, now we look at what the market has done in the opening two weeks of this year
00:08 in the association.
00:10 Let's start with the title odds on opening night.
00:13 Of course, we had the co-favorites out east and two teams from the Western Conference
00:17 with the same exact price as well.
00:20 Plus 3.80 for the Celtics, plus 3.80 for the Bucs, plus 5.50 for the Nugs, the defending
00:26 champs, and plus 5.50 for the Suns.
00:30 Now we go to where things stand, Donnie, at this current point.
00:34 The Celtics plus 3.70, the Bucs plus 4.10, a 40-cent separation there as Boston was the
00:41 last remaining undefeated team in the NBA until last night.
00:45 And the Nuggets off to a very strong start, 6-1 overall this year.
00:50 Now a 5-1 price, a full dollar in front of the Suns.
00:54 Donnie, does that market movement with those four top teams, the big four, according to
00:58 the oddsmakers in this NBA season, mean or signify anything to you?
01:03 Absolutely not, because the NBA and the players treat it this way.
01:06 It's not a regular season thing.
01:08 It's almost a projection, Ben.
01:10 And you want to go back, this is just a few years ago.
01:12 Always take a look at the Brooklyn Nets.
01:14 The Brooklyn Nets, if the season ended, like, you know, let's just say 65 games into the
01:18 season, they wouldn't even have been in the playoffs.
01:20 But the fact they had so many superstars, they were being priced as like the second
01:23 best team in the Eastern Conference, which was hilarious in itself.
01:27 But the oddsmakers were correct in their thought process.
01:29 Look, don't worry about them getting the 10th seed in a play-in scenario or the 8th
01:34 seed overall.
01:35 If they just make it into the playoffs and they're healthy with their superstars, they
01:38 can win the conference and/or an NBA championship.
01:40 And that's what we're getting right now.
01:41 Nobody's watching the Phoenix Suns right now and saying to themselves, "Boy, that team
01:45 stinks.
01:46 They missed.
01:47 Drop them down to 65 to win the championship."
01:48 Like, no, they could go on a long losing streak and the NBA people who are pricing the markets
01:53 here at the books are saying, "Well, if they do make it to the playoffs and deal Durant
01:57 and, you know, Booker are healthy, away they go in a championship, they can win here."
02:02 That's the way they're pricing these things and rightfully so right now.
02:05 Nobody's hitting the panic button on being too good right now or too bad because we're
02:09 all saying to ourselves, "Let's reevaluate once we get to February, March, and April."
02:14 My apologies.
02:15 I sold Denver one win short.
02:17 They are 7-1 so far this year to start off this NBA season.
02:22 The best record around the association, Nikola Jokic last night at home against New Orleans,
02:27 35 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists, a triple-double yet again for the Joker.
02:35 Nikola Jokic, well, on his way to maybe a third NBA MVP award in the last four years.
02:42 We'll look at the awards markets in just a moment.
02:45 Donnie, the biggest movement that we showed you right there from the opening night title
02:49 odds to where things stand two weeks into the year is the LA Clippers, not because of
02:53 a hot start to this season but because of the acquisition of James Horton, 27-1 on the
02:59 opening night of this NBA year, cut by more than half, Donnie, 27-1 to plus 1,300.
03:06 James Horton made his debut last night inside Madison Square Garden.
03:10 The Knicks played spoiler, winning 1-11-97.
03:13 Again, Donnie, that's one game, the first game for the Beard as a member of the Clips
03:20 on the road in MSG.
03:23 But do you evaluate this Clippers team, Donnie, as a true conference contender out west, maybe
03:28 worth a bet at 13-1 to win the NBA championship?
03:32 What's the terminology we always use here in this?
03:35 Paper champions, Ben.
03:36 That's exactly what the Clippers are.
03:37 You write down their roster on paper and look at it and go, "Yeah, as good as any team in
03:42 the NBA," but that piece of paper does not get to play in basketball games.
03:46 The players do.
03:47 And the problem with that is these players that the Clippers have very rarely show up
03:51 in big moments.
03:52 And I'm not talking about being great basketball players because Kawhi Leonard has won a championship
03:55 in the NBA.
03:56 Paul George has made multiple all-star games.
03:58 James Horton is a multiple-time MVP here.
04:01 And as you sit back and say to yourselves, "Well, hmm, can I get those guys to actually
04:05 be available and ready to go in the playoffs?"
04:07 It hasn't happened for the Clippers here.
04:09 So what makes us believe the same thing is not going to happen year after year after
04:14 year?
04:15 Oh, look at this Clippers bunch.
04:16 Talented as anybody, but nobody's available in crunch time when we actually have to win
04:19 a series and move on.
04:21 That's the way I look at it.
04:22 I can't fault, just to say, the fans of the sportsbook to push them up to a 13-1 price
04:26 right now to win the championship because they're talented.
04:29 And on a one-off game against anybody, when they're healthy, yes, they can win.
04:33 But we've seen this story play out way too many times.
04:35 The Clippers won't be getting my money.
