Labour shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said Suella Braverman "has given up on fixing the Tories' asylum chaos" and is "looking for anyone else to blame".
Whilst on a visit to the US, Suella Braverman called on politicians to consider whether international refugee rules are "fit for our modern age" or are in need of reform.

00:00 The Home Secretary has totally failed to tackle the Tories' asylum chaos.
00:06 So she's ramping up the rhetoric and looking around for someone else to blame.
00:11 The failure to go after the criminal gangs, the failure to stop dangerous boat crossings
00:15 increasing, the failure to end the hotel use or clear the backlog in the asylum system
00:21 all lie with the Conservative government, not with international arrangements.
00:26 Really, she should be getting a grip of her own failures here at home rather than simply
00:31 swanning around and trying to find other people to blame abroad.
00:36 In this country I think most people want to see strong border security and also a properly
00:41 controlled and managed immigration system because that's important for our country and
00:46 it's why the UK needs to do our bit to help those who have fled persecution and conflict
00:52 and also make sure that those who are not refugees are returned.
00:56 But we don't have any of those things under the Tories.
00:59 Instead what we've got is total chaos in the system and a Home Secretary who sadly, instead
01:05 of getting a grip, just ramps up the rhetoric and tries to blame everyone else but herself.
01:10 That's just deeply damaging to this country.
