High School STEM girls activity day at Launceston airport.  As part of the STEM learning day students were given a personalised tour of the airport and its operations as well as creating their own airplane which took flight in the Departures Hall under the iconic Miss Flinders.

00:00 My name's Olga, I'm the National Coordinator for Pool Aeronautics, which is the STEM outreach

00:07 program for the Royal Aeronautical Society. Today we're here with grade 8 and 9 students

00:13 and we're sharing with them just how exciting the aerospace and aviation industry is.

00:18 We've been hearing from guest speakers from around Tasmania and the aviation industry

00:22 are typically dominated by men, to learn about potential careers in this industry.

00:29 And we got to hear about different parts of the aviation industry, so not necessarily

00:33 just being a commercial pilot, but also being like a paramedic or the Royal Flying Doctor

00:40 Service or even being on a board for the legislation and committees.

00:45 On the tour we spoke to a pilot and some of the mechanics and engineers who work on the

00:52 planes regularly and they told us a bit of their day to day life and how they got into

00:59 the aviation industry to begin with. I found it interesting to see that there wasn't

01:07 necessarily one set pathway to get into aviation. It made me realise that I can utilise my future

01:14 medical skills in something other than a hospital.
