Man undergoing shark after shark bite attack in mid-north NSW

A 44-year-old surfer is in a serious condition after being attacked by a shark at a beach in New South Wales. The man managed to fight off the shark and swim to shore where surfers performed crucial first aid.

00:07 Emergency crews were called to Lighthouse Beach at around 10am after Port Macquarie

00:12 local Toby Begg was bitten by a shark.

00:16 We believe that the man's tried to fight the shark for up to 30 seconds.

00:20 So from what we've been told it was a fairly sustained and prolonged attack.

00:25 The 44-year-old suffered severe injuries to both legs and life-threatening blood loss.

00:32 The shark was most likely a great white, measuring around 4 metres.

00:38 Surfers and others at the beach provided crucial assistance.

00:42 There was a lot of surfers here at the time who were able to assist this guy to shore

00:47 and assist with first aid until the paramedics arrived.

00:50 There was an off-duty emergency doctor who was also on scene and he's assisted with the

00:57 other members of the public to apply tornacose to the man's leg.

01:01 The surfer's quick response has been credited with making sure the man made it to hospital

01:06 alive.

01:07 Police provided an escort so the ambulance could make it there as quickly as possible.

01:13 Kevin Young lives nearby.

01:15 His son, Zach, died in 2013 after being bitten by a shark.

01:21 Today they were able to save him because of a quick response and somehow stopping the

01:25 blood loss.

01:27 So personally that's close to home.

01:32 Beaches in the area will remain closed for now while drone monitoring checks for shark
