Police confirm a shark that attacked a surfer off Lighthouse Beach Port Macquarie on Friday, August 25, was a great white.

00:00 A 44-year-old man was swimming with a number of other people in the water about 150 metres

00:05 offshore, where they believe that the man's been attacked by a shark.

00:10 This has been witnessed by a number of other surfers.

00:14 The reports are the man has tried to fight this shark for up to 30 seconds and has then

00:18 swum himself to shore, where he has realised that he's sustained significant lower leg

00:24 injuries.

00:25 First aid was tended to at the scene.

00:28 There was an off-duty emergency doctor who was also on scene, and he's assisted with

00:34 the other members of the public to apply tourniquets to the man's leg.

00:42 Ambulance arrived shortly after, where the man was then conveyed with the assistance

00:46 of police to Port Macquarie Hospital in a serious condition with life-threatening injuries,

00:54 sustained from the lower leg injuries and also significant blood loss.

00:58 He's currently in theatre at this stage at Port Macquarie Hospital.

01:01 We've been in contact with the Department of Primary Industries in regards to the incident.

01:07 We've provided advice that the shark involved is a white shark, 3.8 to 4.2 metres in size.

01:15 I think that the passers-by and the members of the public, and to have the absolute luck

01:21 of having an emergency department doctor on scene, are all going to be key things that

01:27 are going to lend itself to giving this gentleman the best chance of survival.

01:36 the Port Macquarie Hospital.
