German Automakers Turn To Hydrogen

While battery-powered vehicles may be the current fad, that doesn’t mean other “clean” technologies have slid to the backburner. Hydrogen fuel cell technology, first touted by Toyota ($TM@Japan) with the Mirari and Honda ($HMC@Japan) with the Clarity, has become the eco-friendly focus for German automakers BMW ($BMWYY@Germany) and Audi. With passenger car prototypes in the works, these companies believe political fortunes could favor hydrogen in the future. Hydrogen fuel is already popular in the German steel and chemical industries, and now BMW plans to have a hydrogen car on the road by 2030. After the news broke, BMW stock traded nearly $2 higher Wednesday.
