'Music in Pyeongchang' celebrating 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth kicks off on Wed.

One of South Korea's representative classical music festivals 'Music in Pyeongchang' kicked off on Wednesday.
It presents Beethoven's music throughout the festival.

Beethoven's majestic symphony 'Choral' echoes throughout the Alpensia music tent, surrounded by fresh air from the Daegwallyeong mountains.
While COVID-19 is still in the back of our minds,... the seats fill quickly as the audience eagerly waits for the show to begin.

The festival kicked off to beautiful classical tunes mainly Beethoven’s symphonies, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the maestro’s birth.
Performances are led by artistic director Son Yeol-eum,... a well-known pianist who came second at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011.
This year’s theme is “It must be ",... which was a note the Beethoven wrote on the manuscript of one of his last pieces of work, the String Quartet Number 16.
"Although there are many sayings Beethoven left behind,... I believe this phrase "It must be" penetrates his whole life and music. Since I started this in 2018 as an artistic director I had in mind to make this a title for 2020 and coincidentally this year has been difficult time for us so this phrase means even more."
Nine main concerts’ titles all start with the letter of each alphabet of 'Beethoven',... to show respect toward the German composer,... and among them, five will be held in the music tent and the others in the Alpensia Concert Hall.
"I am very excited for 'Pastoral' because it fits very well with our festival which is played among nature. We can feel the spirit of Beethoven better as he composed music based on the concept of nature and God as he had a hearing disability. Also performances on August 1st, 2nd and 7th that will be led by a violinist rather than a conductor will also be interesting."
The festival will include outreach performances such as drive-in concerts and will run until August 8th.
