Vietnamese people paint coconuts with gold and traditional symbols for lunar new year

People in Vietnam have been decorating coconuts with gold paint and symbols in preparation for the coming Lunar New Year.

On Lunar New Year in Vietnam, people will buy coconuts to decorate their ancestral altars. The green coconuts will be drawn with symbols of the Lunar New Year.

In this video, filmed on January 12 in Thai Nguyen, the preparation is shown off, with paint and glitter used to decorate the coconuts. To complete each coconut the artist will take about 30 minutes.

The decorated coconut will sell from $1.50 to $2 USD per fruit.
