SUVs take up almost half of South Korean car market

Sport utility vehicles have been gaining popularity here in South Korea in recent years... and now take up almost half of the domestic car market.
Data from the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Industry and Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association shows
recreational vehicles like SUVs account for roughly 290-thousand of the total 610-thousand vehicles running in this country.
While both local and imported SUVs are popular among consumers, sales of Korea-made SUVs saw a rise of 12 percent in the first half of 2019 compared to the same period the year before.
Sales of smaller vehicles, on the other hand, dropped by around 19 percent during the same period.
More people are expected to turn to SUVs with the number projected to make up over one-half of the domestic car market by the year's end.
