EC may frame charges against Ashok Chavan in paid news case

The Election Commission (EC), which will on Thursday hear the case relating to poll expenses by former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan on an alleged "paid news" item during 2009 assembly election, will decide on framing charges against him as requested by his legal team.

Though Chavan will not be appearing in person for the hearing, he will be represented by his "authorized counsel". The EC is likely to frame the charges against him, something he has requested the Commission to do before proceeding with the hearing.

Chavan had recently won the Lok Sabha poll from Nanded on a Congress ticket. He is one of the two Congress candidates elected from the state to the 16th Lok Sabha. The EC had last week, on the directions of the Supreme Court that okayed EC's writ to inquire into 'paid news' cases or incorrect declaration of expenses, summoned Chavan for hearing the alleged paid news case against him.
