Jo Song-gil seeks asylum in U.S.: La Repubblica

We start with the latest update on the senior North Korean diplomat in Italy who is believed to be seeking asylum.
Italian daily La Repubblica, citing foreign affairs sources, reported Friday that Jo Song-gil, the former charge d'affaires of the North's embassy in Rome, is seeking asylum in the U.S., and that he and his family are currently under the protection of Italian authorities as they wait.
The paper added that Jo had sought assistance from the Italian government in mid-November, and that Italian authorities have been communicating with the U.S. discreetly.
As Jo's assignment came to an end in late November, he allegedly went into hiding with his wife earlier that month,... with his current whereabouts still unknown.
This comes at a crucial time and could have a negative impact on Pyeongyang and Washington's hopes of holding the second summit between their leaders early this year.
