Lava Bursts 'High as Tree Tops' From New Fissure in Eruption-Hit Hawaii District

A 12th fissure opened with a burst of gas bubbles, blasting molten lava skyward, near Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Monday, May 7, the US Geological Survey said.The latest fissure opened shortly after the 11th became inactive, the USGS said. The fissures opened up in the Leilani Estates subdivision in Hawaii’s Puna district after a May 4 earthquake.The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said on May 6 that a total of 26 homes had been destroyed by the flows since eruptions began after the quake.This video, recorded from a drone, shows molten lava bubbling up from what the USGS said was the 12th fissure.
