Lava Splatters From Fissure 22 in Kilauea Volcano's Lower East Rift Zone

Volcanic cones formed from lava flow at fissure 22 on May 21 in the lower East Rift Zone of Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano, according to the US Geological Survey.Satellite imagery from USGS showed how much an eruptive vent at the summit of Kilauea had grown since May 5.Lava began to travel into the ocean creating laze, short for lava haze, on May 19.The white cloud is comprised of a mixture of condensed seawater steam, hydrochloric acid gas, and tiny shards of volcanic glass, according to the US Geographical Survey. “This mixture has the stinging and corrosive properties of diluted battery acid, and should be avoided,” USGS said.
