New Lava Fissure Opens in Hawaii's Puna, as More Eruptions Warned
  • 6 years ago
The USGS’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that two new fissures opened near the Halekamahina Loop in Pahoa, Hawaii, on May 13, the 17th and 18th in the area since eruptions began in the wake of an earthquake near the Kilauea volcano on May 4.The 18th fissure to be recorded by the USGS was later reclassified as the 17th, as the earlier fissure did not erupt lava, which is the USGS’s criteria for assigning it a number. However, an 18th fissure did follow later on May 13, according to Honolulu Civil Beat, though the USGS had yet to officially record that one by early May 14.Continued eruptions and earthquake activity were likely, the observatory said.
