Manus Island Asylum Seekers Prepare for Centre Closure
  • 6 years ago

Asylum seekers and refugees inside Manus Island Refugee Processing Centre continued to protest on October 29 while they anxiously awaited the closure of the Australian-run offshore detention centre on Tuesday. The government said local accommodation and support would be provided for asylum seekers before Manus’ closure however the United Nations said the people would be rendered “homeless and destitute” with “no income support and little chance of finding work to provide for their food,” The Guardian reported. Local media said the men could be in danger if they were moved to East Lorengau, PNG, or to another detention centre on the Micronesian island of Nauru. These video and images show the residents of Manus RPC on Sunday, walking through the centre two days before its closure.PNG Police said the safety couldn’t be guaranteed with the government now deploying the notorious Mobile Squad, a branch of the police slammed by Human Rights Watch as a “paramilitary”, to the centre, Fairfax Media reported. The group was reported to be discreetly funded by the Australian Immigration Department and is allegedly responsible for rapes and murders on the island. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection did not respond to Storyful’s request for a comment on the centre’s closure.
