Shark lover dies after brutal attack in world’s deadliest shark territory

RÉUNION, FRANCE — A Frenchman who dedicated his life to watching out for sharks met his end at the hands of one, following a horrific attack in one of the world’s deadliest shark attack hot spots.
On April 29 around 11a.m., trained shark spotter Adrien Dubosc, 30, was bodyboarding with two friends near the French island La Réunion. While in the water, little did they realize a predator was swimming nearby, thirsty for blood. The next thing he knew, Dubosc was hit with a bite to the right thigh, and then another to the groin area.
As he was pulled to shore, beachgoers including members of his family looked on in horror. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to rescue him, but Dubosc passed away just 30 minutes after the attack.
His tragic death comes a mere two months after one of his best friends, Alexandre Naussac, 26, died in the same fashion. La Réunion is known to be a shark attack hot spot, the assault on Dubosc now the 21st on the island over the past six years, and the ninth fatal incident.
Dubosc was a member of Shark Watch Patrol, a group whose mission is to alert people to bull and tiger sharks in the area. Dubosc also regularly posted on Facebook about sharks he’d seen, and tried to educate people about them.
