A 65-year-old woman was killed by a shark while snorkeling off of the island of Maui, in Hawaii.

On Wednesday morning, a shark attack occurred at a popular surf spot in the Kanahena Cove area of Ahii-Kinau Natural Area Reserve.

The victim went snorkeling with two other friends but they got separated and she was alone at the time of the attack, SkyNews reported.

The victim was found unresponsive and face down about 200 yards offshore by other snorkelers who pulled her back to the beach.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and tried to administer lifesaving aid, CNN reported.

Although there were no reported witnesses, injuries to her upper torso suggested she was attacked by a shark.

This is the first death from a shark attack reported in Hawaii this year.

The area is closed to swimmers and other water activities until deemed safe to reopen it.
