Tear Gas Fired at Caracas Anti-Maduro Protest

Tear gas was fired as anti-government protesters clashed with police in Caracas, Venezuela, on Wednesday, April 19.At least two people, a teenager in Caracas and a woman in San Cristobal, were killed on Wednesday during nationwide protests against the government of President Nicolas Maduro, local media reported. Tens of thousands of people joined the demonstrations, calling for new elections and the release of opposition politicians from prisons.A counter-protest was also held in Caracas, the BBC reported.Anti-government protests resurged in Venezuela after the Supreme Court decided in March to strip power from the opposition-controlled National Assembly. That decision was reversed three days later. In a separate move, Venezuela’s comptroller banned opposition leader Henrique Capriles from holding political office for 15 years, fuelling additional outrage in the country.
