President Obama continues granting commutations of federal sentences
  • 7 years ago
President Obama announced another 79 commutations for federal prisoners Tuesday, bringing the grand total to over 1,000 during his eight years in the White House. Of the 1,000+ shortened sentences, 342 were for life terms. Obama has released 839 federal prisoners alone in 2016. Obama has now commuted more sentences than the past 11 presidents combined. His efforts align with the Clemency Initiative that was launched in 2014, which aims to address the jailing of people for tough-on-crime drug laws.
