Wearing Bifocals May Cause Blurring and Dangerous for Elderly Movement

A new study shows that wearing bifocals or trifocals may cause visual blurring. This creates a risk for older people having a misstep and fall, researchers report. The findings showed that the effects of blurry vision on stepping accuracy occurred most when participants were looking ahead of where they were stepping. For the study, 19 adults with an average age of 72 did a series of stepping tasks while wearing their normal bifocal or trifocal glasses. While the stepping errors were small, the risk of falling could be high while walking on stairs or uneven surfaces.
