Mexico: Historic Supreme Court Marijuana Decision

In a historic decision Mexico’s Supreme Court decided on Wednesday that it was unconstitutional to forbid the advocacy group SMART to grow marijuana for recreational use. Thus far, however, the decision only applies to the four plaintiffs. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto noted that recreational use is still illegal and will be punished. Many proponents point to the 100,000 people dead and 26,000 disappeared since 2006 as a result of prohibition policies and the so-called “War on Drugs.” They hope the Supreme Court decision will open the door to full legalization.
