Cultura Latina – Film in Argentina, ‘Nikkei’ Heritage in Peru

Follow the music, admire the art, place yourself inside historic architecture, in Telesur's "Cultura Latina". In this week's program, host Mauricio Izquierdo takes us to Argentina for a visit to a film museum, and then on to Peru, to get acquainted with the Japanese-Peruvian Cultural Association. The Pablo Ducros Hicken Museum in Buenos Aires holds a large collection of items used in movies since 1917, giving us an introduction to the history of film in Argentina. Collections include cultural artifacts, costumes, photographs and movie posters. Peru has the largest Japanese community in Latin America. There are an estimated 50,000 Peruvians of Japanese descent now living there. They are known as “Nikkei,” and the Peruvian-Japanese Cultural Center celebrates their heritage and contributions. The first Japanese immigrants arrived in Peru in 1899 to work in large haciendas. The month of April is Peruvian-Japanese Friendship Month, when the center hosts book fairs, culinary expositions, art shows, music concerts, and this year, the work of a special Japanese calligraphy artist. teleSUR
