Over 100 injured in Rio train collision

Some 140 people are injured in a collision between two trains on the outskirts of Rio de Janieiro, according to local media.

Authorities say one of the trains was stopped at a station when the other one crashed into it from behind, jolting the passengers.

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) UNIDENTIFIED VICTIM SAYING:

"I felt the impact and when I looked around everyone was on the floor, people on top of each other. It was a real mess. When we got out we saw a man under the train too, the man was badly injured."

Injured passengers were rushed to four health care centers in the surrounding area.

According to some witnesses, thieves were taking advantage of the chaotic scene:

"A boy came along, grabbed my telephone out of my hand and ran off, then they threw me out of the station."
