Indonesia expands search for missing AirAsia jet, U.S. sends warship

An international search for the missing AirAsia plane enters its third day.

The operation has been extended to 10,000 square nautical miles across land and sea.

But the focus of the search is around this area in the Java waters, close to where the jet disappeared on Sunday,

Aircraft are preparing to take the families of the 162 passengers on board to the scene.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) INDONESIA AIRASIA CEO, SUNU WIDYATMOKO SAYING:

"The aircraft is only circling around in the locations just to give the next of kin and also the media the situation, to know what is the situation taking place in the location and also for them to be able to pray, to wish that the search and rescue could go smoothly and they could find the missing plane soonest,"

Contact was lost soon after the plane requested a change in course because of the bad weather -- roughly halfway through the Indonesian flight to Singapore.
